Why the office is more than a workplace
From dragging ourselves in on a Monday morning, battling through each day of the week and then skipping out jubilantly on a Friday, love it or loathe it, we spend a prolific time at the office. Given that so much of our lives are spent at work, it makes sense that the office should be more than just a workspace.
The confines of the office walls isn’t just about sending emails, attending meetings and gazing out the window wishing you were elsewhere! On the contrary, there are a number of reasons why the office is more than a workplace.
A place to make friends
An eight hour working day might seem long but it would seem a whole lot longer if you didn’t have any friends in the office. Whilst it would be almost impossible to expect everyone in the office to be best friends with everyone else, adapting simple strategies such as treating people as you would expect to be treated yourself, dishing out plenty of smiles in the office and making your colleagues feel important, will help ensure the working day is not only significantly bearable but is even enjoyable.
Somewhere to get fit
In 2013 the number of people cycling to work increased to more than three quarter of a million across England and Wales. Asides the popularity of cycling and working to the office being on the rise, more and more companies are installing features on work premises, such as on-site gym facilities and ping-pong tables in break rooms, designed to help employees stay healthy and happy.
A place to eat well
As well as promoting exercise, there is a modern push for employers to encourage employees to eat healthily during office hours.
A study conducted by Vielife, a health and wellbeing consultancy, found that a healthy employee is up to 20% more productive than an unhealthy employee.
Consequently, more and more employers are providing free fruit snacks in the office and meals are becoming much healthier in staff canteens.
Somewhere to socialise
The trend of homeworking might be on the rise but there is only so much socialising you can do with your cat!
By contrast, the office provides somewhere to chat to colleagues, discuss last night’s soaps and enjoy socialising.
