Wellbeing in the workplace
Wellbeing in the workplace
At Aztec, we have been advising our clients on the creation of spaces that promote the health, happiness and motivation of their team for many years. While wellbeing in the workplace is by no means a new discussion point, it’s one that has continued to grow in importance, with improvements sought in the ability to measure the ROI of an office fit-out or refurbishment project. But with new measurement tools being pioneered in the US, the industry is moving closer to a universally accepted standard. While wellness in the workplace has historically been measured in a very un-scientific way using anecdotal evidence and feedback from those using the space, things are changing.
Global property consultant, Cushman & Wakefield, this week launched its ‘Well Workplace Report’, which highlights the growing emphasis on employee health at work, stating that workplaces developed with a focus on wellbeing will almost certainly be more commercially successful than their counterparts. Several leading companies within the international property market, including CBRE and Arup, have adopted a new Well Building Standard (WELL). WELL is a ‘performance based system for measuring, certifying and monitoring features of buildings that impact health and wellbeing of the people who live, work and learn in them’. The standard has been developed by the International WELL Building Institute. The guidelines move measurement beyond anecdotal evidence for the first time and are an exciting development for both the property industry and companies keen to promote wellbeing in the workplace, reaping the rewards in the form of productivity and improved performance.
Measuring ROI of a fit-out
The guidelines move towards making the ROI of a fit-out or refurbishment project measurable against the bottom line, increasing the likelihood of a continuing corporate focus on wellness and further improvement and innovation. We know that the UK’s lack of wellness measures is costing the UK economy £57bn each year in lost productivity at a time when it’s more important than ever for UK firms to be at their competitive best. Businesses should be thinking about how their own office space would score on the scale, and the positive impact any changes would make on their performance.
Improving wellbeing in the workplace
The good news is there are many ways businesses can move towards boosting wellness, whether via the introduction of biophilic principles, increasing natural light, reducing noise or making sure the space is appropriate to facilitate activities such as exercise or mindfulness. The options are endless, but will have a marked effect on the performance of any business. Offering a unique turnkey approach, Aztec can deliver fit-out or refurbishment projects from start to finish. We even have our own in-house joinery workshop, creating bespoke office furniture.
